Turkey and Azerbaijan push ahead with multi-nation electricity corridor projects
Turkey’s Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar announced three new power-line initiatives, including a four-country green corridor and a Black Sea link to Europe.
At the Turkey-Azerbaijan Energy Forum, Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar outlined three transmission projects: a line via Nakhchivan, a green electricity corridor linking Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey and Bulgaria, and a subsea route to Europe reaching Romania and Hungary. He likened the corridor to the Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline and emphasized using current assets as a first step, with capacity upgrades over time.
Bayraktar hopes to finalize agreements at the upcoming COP31 climate conference in Antalya. Azerbaijani Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov echoed the goal of expanding cooperation beyond oil and gas to include renewables and grid interconnections, and both signed an updated forum protocol establishing a working group on electricity links. The initiatives could eventually connect with Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, creating a broader Turkic energy network.
