Turkey and Northern Cyprus denounce US renewal of Cyprus arms exemption
Turkey and the Turkish-controlled north condemned the United States' decision to extend the exemption that lifts defence restrictions on Cyprus, saying it threatens trust and regional stability.
On Sunday, Turkey and the self-declared authorities in the occupied north criticized the United States for extending the exemption that allows defence equipment to be exported to Cyprus for the upcoming fiscal year. The Turkish foreign ministry argued that the step could further erode trust between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot sides and intensify pressure on the latter community. It also claimed that the Republic of Cyprus' armament activities undermine regional stability.
The northern foreign ministry expressed deep regret, saying the decision ignores the realities on the island and could fuel armament trends during a period of serious conflict in the Middle East. Both parties called on global actors to respect the delicate balance in the Eastern Mediterranean and to pursue a fair policy for two separate states and peoples. Turkey reaffirmed its role as a guarantor power, pledging to protect Turkish Cypriot rights and security.
