Turkey grants first military type certificate to home-grown HÜRKUŞ-II aircraft

Turkey issued its inaugural Military Type Certificate to the domestically built HÜRKUŞ-II trainer after a comprehensive national certification process.

On Sept. 9, Turkey awarded its first Military Type Certificate to the indigenously developed HÜRKUŞ-II trainer, marking a milestone in national aerospace capability. The decision was made by a certification board composed of staff from the Secretariat of Defense Industries and the Turkish Air Force, according to an SSB statement. The certification process examined twelve areas, including avionics, propulsion, human factors and software, and confirmed 1,790 specific requirements while reviewing 950 supporting documents.

A total of 153 tests were performed: 38 laboratory, 71 ground and 44 flight tests. Haluk Görgün highlighted that the project demonstrates Turkey’s ability to independently design, produce, test, verify and certify aircraft, and will build lasting expertise for future national platforms. Specialists from the Defense Ministry, TR Airworthiness Services and Turkish Aerospace Industries collaborated throughout the program.

Why it matters

It shows Turkey can independently certify military aircraft, boosting its defence self-sufficiency and industrial base.
