Turkey hits all-time monthly high for solar and wind electricity output

Turkey’s solar and wind plants generated a combined 9.9 billion kWh in August, the highest monthly total on record.

In August, Turkey’s renewable electricity generation hit an unprecedented level, with solar and wind together supplying 9.9 billion kWh, according to the Energy and Natural Resources Ministry. Solar output totaled 5.16 billion kWh, accounting for 14.1% of total generation, while wind added 4.74 billion kWh, or 12.9%. The combined figure marks the highest monthly total ever recorded for these two sources.

Total electricity generation that month was 36.71 billion kWh, dominated by hydropower, which produced 9.08 billion kWh and comprised 24.7% of the mix. Renewable sources overall supplied 56.4% of the country’s electricity, and domestic energy accounted for 69.7% of generation. The ministry noted that the January-August period also saw record-high outputs for hydropower, wind and solar since 2000.

Why it matters

The record shows Turkey’s rapid shift toward renewable energy, reducing reliance on imports and emissions.
