Turkey intensifies tax audits of high-income individuals and large firms

Turkey's Tax Inspection Board has expanded audits of high-income earners, covering about one-third of large taxpayers this year.

Turkey's tax authorities are stepping up scrutiny of affluent taxpayers, applying inspections, requests for explanations and monitoring tools. This year, 31.3% of large-scale taxpayers are being examined, a sharp rise from the historic 11% rate. Medium-size taxpayers face explanation requests, while small ones receive warning-type monitoring.

The second High-Income Groups Monitoring and Compliance Program identified 16,307 high-income individuals, splitting them into shareholders of major firms and those with luxury lifestyles but no corporate stakes. The initiative has raised the declared tax base by TL 48.7 billion, including TL 6.7 billion from newly filed returns and significant increases in corporate tax bases.

Why it matters

The crackdown could boost government revenues and signal stricter enforcement of tax fairness in Turkey.
