Turkey's credit card spending surges 35% to 2.5 trillion lira in September

Credit card payments in Turkey rose 35% year-on-year to 2.5 trillion lira in September, making up most of the country's total card spending.

Data from the Interbank Card Center show that September credit card payments in Turkey reached 2.5 trillion lira, a 35% jump compared with the same month a year earlier and representing the bulk of the nation's 3 trillion lira card-spending total. Credit card transactions increased by 12% to 1.14 billion, and the stock of credit cards grew 11% to 155 million. When debit, prepaid and credit cards are combined, total card payments rose to 2.97 trillion lira, also a 35% rise year-on-year. The overall number of cards in circulation rose modestly, and e-commerce payments continued to expand, with online card spending up 35% to 901 billion lira, making up 30% of all card transactions.

Why it matters

The surge indicates strong consumer confidence and growing reliance on electronic payments in Turkey.
