Turkey's Osman Gazi platform to boost Black Sea gas output after October launch

Turkey will send its first floating production platform, Osman Gazi, from Filyos Port to the Black Sea on Oct. 17, aiming to more than double gas output from the Sakarya field.

Turkey's inaugural floating production platform, named Osman Gazi, is set to leave Filyos Port in Zonguldak province on Oct. 17 for deployment in the Black Sea. The 298.5-meter vessel will operate for two decades, processing gas from the Sakarya field and increasing daily output from one outlet 9.5 million cubic metres to 20 million. Its topside houses 21 facilities, many built in Turkey, and it can accommodate 140 crew members while situated about 170 kilometres offshore.

The ministry estimates the added gas is worth about $10 million per day and could contribute roughly $3.5 billion annually to the Turkish economy. Production is slated to start in early 2027 after initial flaring later this year, completing the field's second development phase and expanding domestic gas coverage to 8 million households.

Why it matters

The platform could significantly raise Turkey's energy self-sufficiency and boost the national economy.
