Turkey's solar and wind share of electricity generation surges over the past decade

According to the Energy and Natural Resources Ministry, solar and wind now provide 11.6% and 12.1% of Turkey's electricity generation, respectively, marking a dramatic rise since 2016. Solar's share grew 28-fold from 0.4% while wind more than doubled from 5.7% over the same period. Total generation capacity reached 126,476 MW by the end of July, with solar installations accounting for 27,507 MW and wind for 15,358 MW, together representing roughly one-third of all capacity.

July also set a new record for solar generation at 5.37 billion kWh. Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar described the shift as a major step toward energy independence and a cleaner future, and said Turkey will present fresh renewable targets at the upcoming COP31 climate conference in Antalya.
