Turkey's Trade Minister Holds Talks with EU Ambassadors on Deepening Economic Ties

Turkish Trade Minister Ömer Bolat met EU ambassadors in Ankara to discuss trade, the EU's Industrial Acceleration Act and ways to boost the customs union.

Turkish Trade Minister Ömer Bolat gathered EU ambassadors in Ankara, with Aivo Orav of the EU Delegation to Türkiye presiding, to evaluate current Turkey-EU economic relations. The discussion covered the European Commission's proposed Industrial Acceleration Act and the desire for Turkish vehicles and components to receive full Union-origin status. Bolat cited a historic $233 billion in trade last year, noting the EU accounts for 43 percent of Turkey's exports and 32 percent of its imports, while European firms hold about 62 percent of Turkey's foreign direct investment stock.

He stressed that Turkey seeks recognition of its unique role within the customs union rather than special treatment, and flagged practical hurdles such as lengthy visa procedures and restrictive road transit quotas. The meeting also prepared for a high-level Turkey-EU Trade Dialogue in Brussels on Oct. 13, co-chaired by Bolat and EU trade chief Maros Sefcovic, aiming to forge concrete solutions.

Why it matters

The talks could shape future trade rules and reduce barriers affecting businesses across Turkey and the EU.
