Turkish intelligence arrests Syrian suspect linked to 2013 Reyhanlı bombings

Turkey’s National Intelligence Organization has detained Ömer el-Hatip, a Syrian wanted under an Interpol Red Notice for his role in the 2013 Reyhanlı bombings that killed 53 people.

Security officials say Ömer el-Hatip was captured while attempting to flee to Europe by sea. He is accused of helping plan the May 11, 2013 attacks in the border town of Reyhanlı and acting as a liaison between the perpetrators and intelligence officers loyal to former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The twin car bombs killed 53 victims and injured many more. The arrest follows a long-standing Interpol notice against him.

Why it matters

The arrest could shed light on Syrian involvement in a deadly Turkish bombing and strengthen counter-terrorism cooperation.
