Turkish journalist detained for social-media post about doctor linked to intelligence case

Fatih Ergin, who serves as news coordinator at the Nefes newspaper, was detained at his home on September 27 on accusations of publicly disseminating false information. The charge stems from a social-media post in which he referred to the late Dr Turgay Tamer as a "former forensic medicine personnel," a description he later amended. Despite the correction, a judge ordered Ergin’s arrest.

Tamer, 66, had been held as part of a reopened inquiry into the 2011 death of former intelligence officer Kaşif Kozinoğlu and was found dead at his residence shortly after being released with a travel ban. His body was sent to the Forensic Medicine Institute for an autopsy. The investigation is being led by Istanbul’s Silivri Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, which continues to probe both the doctor’s death and the original intelligence-officer case.
