Turkish parliament set to vote on ratifying Mecca Defense Alliance pact
The Turkish legislature will consider a treaty that would formalise the Mecca Defense Alliance with Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, strengthening its collective defence clause.
A draft of the Mecca Defense Alliance agreement was submitted to Turkey's parliament for approval. The text, forwarded by the Foreign Ministry, would cement the legal framework linking Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. Lawmakers have been urged by opposition parties to scrutinise the deal before it is enacted. The pact stipulates that an attack on any signatory is treated as an attack on all, a provision highlighted after recent Houthi strikes on Saudi territory.
Why it matters
The vote could lock in a trilateral defence pact, affecting security dynamics in the Middle East and South Asia.
