Turkish parliament to supervise PKK disarmament and related legislation

Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş explained that lawmakers will oversee the new disarmament law, verify that the PKK has completely dissolved, and evaluate security agencies’ assessments and government actions on specific cases. A dedicated monitoring commission will be created to track the law’s execution, and any further legislation will be debated to ensure fairness and transparency. Kurtulmuş emphasized that legal processes cannot proceed until agencies can demonstrate beyond doubt that the PKK’s weapons are out of use.

He also called for an end to divisive political rhetoric, noting that disarmament is only a step toward stronger democratic participation while preserving Turkey’s unitary state and official language. Regarding the region, he said non-state armed groups should no longer be treated as legitimate political actors and that respect for the sovereignty of Iraq, Iran, Syria and Lebanon must be upheld. He referenced the recent Turkey-Iraq agreement to restore state authority in Sinjar and hand over the Bashiqa-Zilkan compound to Iraqi control.
