Turkish researchers map underground features at Durupınar formation as international crews film Ark study

A team led by Professor Cenker Atila of Sivas Cumhuriyet University used ground‑penetrating radar, electrical resistivity tomography and LiDAR to identify straight lines, right‑angle intersections and large underground spaces at the Durupınar formation. Drilling reached about 18 metres and encountered a very hard layer that snapped the drill bit. About 1,000 soil samples have been collected and a robot named Gopher is being prepared to enter the narrow voids for visual inspection and sampling. At the same time, documentary crews from Britain and the United States, including a team led by Bear Grylls, are filming the research near Mount Ararat.

How this was covered

  • The two sides describe this in almost entirely different words

Why it matters

The work shows how scientific tools are being applied to a site that many associate with a well‑known biblical story.

How this story developed

  1. Sep 21 International documentary crews converge on Turkey's Ağrı to film Noah's Ark research
  2. Oct 3 A robot called Gopher is being readied to explore the underground voids.
