Turkish security forces detain second suspect in 2013 Reyhanlı bombing
Authorities captured 59-year-old Bülent Dükkancı in Hatay, marking the latest arrest linked to the 2013 Reyhanlı car-bomb attack.
Security forces in Turkey arrested 59-year-old Bülent Dükkancı, a member of the outlawed THKP-C, during a joint operation by the Hatay Provincial Gendarmerie, the provincial police and the National Intelligence Organization (MİT). The team acted on a tip about his address in the Antakya district of Hatay and recovered two mobile phones, an illegal firearm, a magazine and seven rounds of ammunition. This detention comes two days after MİT seized Ömer el-Hatip, a Syrian operative involved in the 2013 Reyhanlı car-bombings, as he attempted to cross to Europe by sea.
The 2013 attack near the Syrian border killed 53 people and wounded dozens, with el-Hatip having scouted target sites and delivered the bomb-making device. The latest arrests revive a case that resulted in a 2018 verdict sentencing several perpetrators to long prison terms.
Why it matters
The arrests revive investigations into a deadliest Turkish terror attack, highlighting ongoing security efforts and regional tensions.
