Turmeric-derived curcumin shown to protect diabetic blood vessels in rat study
Researchers found that curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, improved vascular health in rats with Type 1 diabetes, suggesting a potential way to lessen cardiovascular complications.
A team led by Swasti Rastogi of the Florida Institute of Technology reported that curcumin, the pigment that gives turmeric its yellow hue, mitigated vascular damage in a rat model of Type 1 diabetes. Presented at the American Physiology Summit in Minneapolis, the findings showed reduced inflammatory markers, corrected calcium signaling, and rebalanced heat-shock protein 70 levels after one month of supplementation. These changes restored the structure and elasticity of the aorta to levels comparable with healthy, non-diabetic animals.
The researchers propose that such effects could lower long-term heart disease risk for people with Type 1 diabetes, but they caution that the results are limited to animals and that appropriate dosing and safety in humans remain to be determined. They advise patients to consult physicians before using turmeric supplements. Further clinical studies are needed to confirm whether the benefits translate to human patients.
