TVNZ workers plan first strike in two decades over wage dispute
Around 150 TVNZ employees will walk out next Thursday, marking the broadcaster's first strike in 20 years, after rejecting a 2.5% pay offer.
E tū confirmed that about 150 TVNZ workers, many also belonging to PSA, will stage a one-hour walkout on Thursday, 29 October, across Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. The strike is the first industrial action at the state broadcaster in two decades. Union leaders argue that the 2.5% salary increase offered by TVNZ does not keep pace with the 3.7% annual inflation figure released by Stats NZ, resulting in a real-terms pay cut.
Journalist and union delegate Ethan Te Ora said staff cannot meet basic living costs under one outlet proposal. TVNZ said it has been in constructive bargaining since July but cannot meet the unions' current demands, while affirming its commitment to a remuneration increase. The dispute highlights ongoing tension between public-sector pay offers and rising living costs.
Why it matters
The strike underscores growing pressure on public broadcasters to match wages with inflation, affecting thousands of households.
