Twelve dead after armed robbery, vehicle crash and police gun battle in PNG

Police in Papua New Guinea say a robbery in Kimbe led to a vehicle rollover and a shootout, leaving twelve men dead.

Police Commissioner David Manning reported that a gang robbed a trade store in Kimbe, the capital of West New Britain province, and attempted to escape in a stolen vehicle. The vehicle rolled over during a police chase, killing several occupants. Those who survived the crash drew weapons and engaged police in a shootout, after which a total of twelve men were confirmed dead, though the split between crash and gun deaths was not disclosed.

Officers seized about 4,000 kina, a large quantity of cigarettes, and at least ten improvised firearms from the wreckage. The suspected leader of the group survived and has been taken into custody. Manning said the outcome sends a clear warning to criminals and appealed to youths involved in gangs to choose a lawful path.
