Twenty-one ex-cricket captains urge Pakistan to honor court-ordered care for Imran Khan

A coalition of 21 former international cricket captains, including Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev, has written to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif asking that a Supreme Court-mandated medical board fully assess Imran Khan’s health and that weekly family visits continue.

Twenty-one ex-captains from nine cricketing nations, among them Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Dilip Vengsarkar and Greg Chappell, addressed a letter to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif renewing a plea for proper medical care for Imran Khan. The appeal follows a Supreme Court order that Khan be transferred to a hospital for evaluation by a board comprising his personal physicians and his sister, Dr Uzma Khan, with weekly family visits reinstated.

After a brief examination by a state-appointed team, Khan was declared medically fit and sent back to Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail, prompting the captains to claim the process was incomplete. Their letter, titled “Appeal by 21 Former International Cricket Captains on the Medical Treatment and Welfare of Imran Khan,” asks that the court-directed board be allowed to finish its independent assessment, that family visits continue without interruption, and that any treatment prescribed be provided promptly.

The signatories stress they are speaking as former teammates and rivals, not as political actors, and view the request as a basic matter of decency. They hope the Pakistani authorities will act swiftly to honor the court’s order and ensure Khan receives the care he needs.

Why it matters

The appeal highlights international pressure on Pakistan to comply with a court order protecting a high-profile detainee’s health.
