Two arrested in Hong Kong after viral video shows 11-year-old pleading for help

Police in Wong Tai Sin detained a 61-year-old grandmother and a 43-year-old foreign domestic helper after a viral video captured an 11-year-old girl begging for assistance.

Authorities acted on a tip from the Social Welfare Department and seized the child's grandmother and a foreign domestic helper on suspicion of child neglect. The girl was found with swollen, reddened limbs and was taken to hospital. Video clips that spread online showed her calling for help amid loud bangs and a man shouting angrily at her. Investigators said the footage suggested possible abuse by those responsible for her care.

Why it matters

The arrests underscore the seriousness of child neglect cases and the role of social media in prompting police action.
