Two Ceuta soldiers airlifted to Madrid hospital after immigrant attack, defence minister visits

Two soldiers injured during an immigrant assault in Ceuta were transferred to Hospital Gómez Ulla in Madrid, where Defence Minister Margarita Robles paid them a visit.

During a recent incident in Ceuta, two soldiers were wounded by immigrants and subsequently evacuated to Hospital Gómez Ulla in Madrid. Defence Minister Margarita Robles visited the hospital on Thursday, stating the ministry’s full support for the injured while they continue their duties. The episode follows a larger stone-throwing ambush in the Benzú district at the end of August, which injured four soldiers and forced them to abandon their vehicle.

Twelve Moroccan individuals were later detained for participation in that attack. Professional associations have urged the government to employ proportionate force given the perceived lack of protection for the troops. The ministry highlighted the ongoing commitment and professionalism of its forces stationed in Ceuta.

Why it matters

The incident underscores security challenges in Ceuta and the government's response to attacks on its military personnel.
