Two Crete firefighters die as wildfire engulfs village amid strong winds
Two Greek firefighters were killed while battling a fast-moving blaze near the village of Krya Vrisi on Crete.
A wildfire that started in the Rethymno area of Crete on Wednesday quickly spread under the influence of strong winds, covering an estimated 15 km of land. While attempting to shift from one fire front to another, two Greek firefighters were caught in the flames and died. The blaze threatened the central-island village of Krya Vrisi, prompting officials to order evacuations for that settlement and two nearby communities.
Greece’s firefighting department has mobilised 156 firefighters and volunteers, supported by four firefighting aircraft and four helicopters. One outlet broadcaster ERT quoted village president Sifis Vavourakis, who described the fire as out of control. The event comes as the EU’s emergency response centre warned that Greece and Italy face an elevated wildfire risk in the weeks ahead, with similar fires raging in Spain and France.
Why it matters
The deaths highlight the growing danger of wildfires in Mediterranean regions and the strain on emergency services.
