Two doctors suspended after mother and newborn die during delivery in Rewa hospital
Two physicians at Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Rewa were suspended after a woman and her baby died during childbirth, prompting an inquiry.
Kalpana Mishra, a resident of Hatwa village in Baikunthpur, was admitted to Gandhi Memorial Hospital on the night of Aug 25 and died along with her infant at 12:56 am on Aug 26. The attending obstetrician, Dr Sonal Agarwal, and the anesthesiologist, Dr Nidhi Pandey, were placed on suspension by the state health ministry. A video recorded moments before Mishra’s death, in which she shouted that doctors intended to kill her, spread widely online.
Deputy chief minister Rajendra Shukla confirmed the suspensions and formed a five-member inquiry panel chaired by Dr Beenu Kushwaha, with members from the health department and medical colleges. The panel must submit its findings within three days. State officials emphasized ongoing efforts to improve maternal and infant health infrastructure while acknowledging the tragedy.
