Two Freight Trains Collide and Catch Fire Near Schwechat

Two freight trains side-collided at the Wien-Kledering freight yard near Schwechat, igniting a blaze that drew multiple fire units but caused no injuries.

Around 17:25 on Tuesday evening, two freight trains brushed against each other at the Wien-Kledering central shunting yard near Schwechat, in the Bruck an der Leitha district. The side-impact set the trains ablaze, creating a towering plume of smoke and igniting several nearby vehicles. Multiple fire departments responded, among them the Flughafen Wien airport fire brigade with a runway-fire appliance, and faced difficulties securing sufficient water at the scene.

According to ÖBB spokesperson Daniel Pinka, no injuries were reported and passenger rail traffic continued without disruption. Klaus Stebal of the regional fire command noted that extinguishing operations were still ongoing. The investigation has not yet determined why the trains collided, though some of the wagons were partially charging electric cars.
