Two Iranian operatives sentenced in Hamburg for plotting attacks on Jewish leaders
A Hamburg higher regional court convicted Ali S. and Tawab M. of espionage and attempted murder and arson on behalf of Iran. They received eight-and-a-half and four-and-a-half year prison terms.
In a verdict delivered by the Hamburg Oberlandesgericht, two men identified as Ali S. and Tawab M. were convicted of espionage and attempted participation in murder and serious arson on orders from Iran. The court determined that the pair, residing in Denmark, had gathered intelligence on Josef Schuster, president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, and Volker Beck, head of the German-Israeli Society, and that Ali S. had also prepared a fire-bombing plan against a kosher food store in Berlin.
According to the federal prosecutor, Ali S. received his directives directly from officers of the Quds-Brigade, the overseas unit of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. The judges sentenced Ali S., 54, to eight and a half years in prison and Tawab M., 43, to four and a half years, matching the prosecution’s demands. Defense lawyers had sought acquittals, but the court found the evidence sufficient to convict both defendants. The case underscores ongoing concerns about Iranian intelligence operations targeting Jewish and pro-Israel figures in Europe.
