Two killed as small plane burns on runway at San Diego's Montgomery-Gibbs Airport

Around 5:21 p.m. on Monday, a single-engine fixed-wing plane crashed onto the runway at Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport in Kearny Mesa, San Diego. San Diego Fire-Rescue reported that about 30 personnel arrived to fight a fire that engulfed the aircraft and spread toward a nearby hillside. The airport was shut down while emergency crews worked to secure the area.

Police and sheriff’s deputies were also on scene, but investigators have not yet determined what led to the crash. Two individuals were pronounced dead following the incident. The runway will remain closed until investigators complete their assessment.
