Two men arrested for acid attack on 22-year-old after rejected marriage proposal in Balod
A 22-year-old woman in Balod was doused with acid after turning down a marriage proposal, and police have detained the alleged stalker and his friend.
Balod Superintendent of Police Kiran Chavan disclosed that Yash Kumar Sonkar, 20, and his friend Karan Kunjam, 20, were apprehended for an acid attack on a 22-year-old woman returning from a library. Police allege Sonkar had been stalking the woman and became enraged when she declined his marriage proposal, prompting him to enlist Kunjam in a plot that began three months earlier. CCTV footage and technical evidence collected by Sub Divisional Officer of Police Vinay Sahu linked the suspects to the crime scene, and investigators traced the acid, purchased in Durg district, to the pair.
After the assault, Kunjam fled toward Tandula Dam, hitchhiked through Jhalmala and Markatola, and was later captured in Kondagaon district. The victim, a competitive-examination aspirant, was first treated at Balod district hospital before being moved to DKS Hospital in Raipur, where she remains in stable condition.
