Two Newcastle primary schools report confirmed hepatitis A cases and issue health alerts
Benton Park Primary and Central Walker Primary in Newcastle have each confirmed a case of hepatitis A and sent letters to parents with guidance from the UK Health Security Agency.
Benton Park Primary and Central Walker Primary, both located in Newcastle, have each identified a pupil with hepatitis A, a contagious liver infection spread through contaminated food, water or poor hand hygiene. Parents received letters that include symptom checklists and advice from the UK Health Security Agency. The agency is working with the schools and local health partners to ensure appropriate public-health actions, such as heightened cleaning and hand-washing protocols.
Authorities stress that the likelihood of further spread among students, teachers or the wider community is low, and no school-based transmission has been detected. Both schools remain operational, with continued emphasis on hygiene to prevent any additional cases. Newcastle City Council directed media inquiries to its public-health team.
Why it matters
Parents need to recognize hepatitis A symptoms and follow hygiene guidance to protect children and prevent spread.
