Two civil servants - a 54-year-old woman and her 45-year-old male colleague - were killed after being shot multiple times during an unannounced weapons inspection at a home in Berngau, Oberpfalz. The victims worked for the Neumarkt district office and were responding to a routine check of the suspect's legally owned firearms. The 60-year-old man, who had served as a police trainee in Bavaria between March 1988 and February 1991 before resigning, was badly wounded and remains hospitalized.
The Nürnberg-Fürth public prosecutor's office confirmed the deaths and said the investigation into motive and the exact course of the attack is ongoing. The incident will be examined by the interior committee of the Bavarian state parliament, and Minister Joachim Herrmann is slated to speak on the matter. Authorities have not yet been able to interview the suspect.
