Two Schwanheim residents near Frankfurt Airport diagnosed with malaria

Frankfurt's health authority announced that two individuals from the Schwanheim neighbourhood, located roughly two kilometres north of Frankfurt Airport, have tested positive for malaria. The cases occur after a summer incident in which six airport employees were infected and two died. Authorities believe infected mosquitoes entered the city in the cargo holds of planes arriving from malaria-endemic regions as early as July.

Peter Tinnemann, head of the health office, urged residents to seek medical care if they develop fever, abdominal pain or other vague symptoms that could indicate "airport malaria." The parasite is transmitted by female Anopheles mosquitoes and is typically confined to tropical and subtropical areas of Africa, the Americas, and parts of Asia and the Pacific. Prompt treatment can prevent death, although infected individuals cannot pass the disease on to others. No further personal details about the new patients were released.
