Two security officers slain in separate attacks near Iran's strategic Chabahar port
Two Iranian security members were killed in distinct incidents in Mehrestan, Sistan-Baluchestan, as violence around the Chabahar port escalates.
In Mehrestan district of Sistan-Baluchestan province, a Basij women's unit commander was killed by gunfire outside her residence, and a separate ambush on a police vehicle claimed another officer's life. Both attacks occurred close to Iran's eastern border with Pakistan, an area that has seen a string of violent incidents targeting security forces near the vital Chabahar port. Rights organization Haalvash noted that military helicopters were patrolling over Iranshahr, underscoring the tense security climate.
Iran's IRGC and its Al Quds Force have previously reported operations against suspected terrorist cells in the region, seizing weapons and equipment. The government attributes these assaults to external terrorist groups it says receive foreign support, raising concerns about stability around the strategic maritime hub.
Why it matters
