Two suspects denied bail after dangerous wrong-way driving chase on Dublin's M50
Daniel Brown and Adam White were refused bail following a police chase in which a stolen car travelled the wrong way on the M50 for over a kilometre.
Daniel Brown, 22, and Adam White, 25, both from Hampton Wood, were charged with dangerous driving, being in a stolen Volkswagen Golf estate, and cannabis-related offences after a high-speed chase on Dublin's M50. Garda Dylan Toner, from Coolock Garda station, presented evidence that the stolen car was driven northbound in the southbound lane for more than one kilometre before the suspects were stopped, with the entire incident recorded by a Garda helicopter.
Because of an industrial dispute over legal-aid fee reforms, the men had no solicitor and elected to represent themselves, remaining silent when charged. The judge warned Brown about self-incrimination and noted that both men had been examined by a doctor, showing bruising and a sore ankle. Despite their presumption of innocence, Judge Dowling denied bail, citing the gravity of the charges, and ordered the defendants to remain in custody until their next appearance at Cloverhill District Court.
Why it matters
The case highlights concerns over road safety, illegal vehicle use and the impact of legal-aid shortages on defendants' rights.
