Two Teens Hospitalized in Critical Condition After Separate E-Scooter Crashes in Greece

A 16-year-old male rider was seriously injured on Saturday in Glyka Nera, northeast of Athens, when a car driven by a 19-year-old struck his electric scooter, throwing him onto the pavement and causing multiple head and body wounds; he is currently intubated in intensive care after surgery. In a separate crash on the island of Tinos in the Cyclades, a 14-year-old female passenger fell from an e-scooter, sustained severe head injuries, and was airlifted to Athens for emergency surgery and intensive care.

These cases come after Greece introduced a ban in late July that bars anyone under 17 from operating e-scooters, a measure prompted by rising injury numbers among youths. According to POEDIN, more than 300 minors have been treated for e-scooter-related injuries in the first half of 2026, up from around 400 cases in 2025, with head trauma accounting for about a third of incidents. Earlier incidents this year involved a 12-year-old in Aspropyrgos and another 14-year-old on Corfu, underscoring ongoing safety concerns. Authorities are considering stricter helmet requirements, mandatory insurance, rider training and location limits to improve compliance with the age restriction.
