Two-time Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal begins new chapter with Dodgers

Left-hander Tarik Skubal, a back-to-back Cy Young Award winner, was dealt from Detroit to Los Angeles and has started three games for the Dodgers.

Tarik Skubal, the left-handed ace who captured the Cy Young Award in both 2024 and 2025, was traded from the Detroit Tigers to the Los Angeles Dodgers just before the August 3 deadline. In return, Detroit acquired outfield prospect Zyhir Hope and right-handed pitching prospects Brady Smith and River Ryan, who were ranked among the Tigers' top prospects. Skubal has taken the mound three times for his new club, recording a 1-2 record with outings against the Cubs, Royals and Brewers, and surrendering two homers.

He is currently playing under a one-year, $32 million deal signed with Detroit and could reach free agency after the 2026 World Series unless the Dodgers negotiate an extension. Ongoing collective-bargaining talks between the MLB Players Association and MLB could affect future contract discussions. Skubal has expressed a desire to finish his career in Detroit, adding intrigue to his upcoming free-agency decisions.

Why it matters

The trade adds a top pitcher to a championship team and influences future contract and free-agency markets.
