Two Toronto reservists suspended after arrest on kidnapping and weapons theft charges
Two members of the 7th Toronto Regiment were arrested in August on organized-crime, kidnapping and firearms-theft allegations and have been barred from military duties.
The Department of National Defence announced that two soldiers from the reserve artillery unit at Moss Park Armoury have been removed from duty after being arrested on organized-crime, kidnapping and firearms-theft charges. The individuals, Bombardier Sachintha Fernando and Bombardier James Moreau, were detained by the Toronto Police Service on August 11, 2026. Following the arrests, they lost permission to use Canadian Armed Forces equipment, facilities, or bases, though they retain their CAF membership while an administrative review is conducted.
Fernando, who joined as a reservist in January 2020, has never been deployed, whereas Moreau, enlisted in March 2018, participated in Operation LASER in 2020. The army is cooperating with the ongoing police investigation, and a source noted that both soldiers have previously instructed new recruits at CFB Borden.
