Two workers die after explosion at Ticino hydroelectric plant
An explosion at the Ritom Hydroelectric Station in Piotta, Switzerland, killed two workers who had been trapped by a fire.
Around 9:30 a.m., a fire broke out at the Ritom Hydroelectric Station in the village of Piotta, located in southern Switzerland's Ticino region. The blaze locked two workers inside the plant, and a subsequent explosion severely damaged the structure. Both men suffered grave injuries and died shortly after the blast.
Authorities have confirmed that one of the deceased was a 55-year-old Swiss national; the identity of the second victim has not yet been released. The hydroelectric facility, owned by Swiss rail operator SBB, is undergoing renovation as part of a centennial-site reconfiguration project. State prosecutors have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire and explosion.
