Two-year-old giant panda Lang Yue to return to China from Dutch zoo
The two-year-old panda Lang Yue will leave Ouwehands Dierenpark in Rhenen for China at the end of the month, as required by a conservation agreement.
Ouwehands Dierenpark in Rhenen announced that its two-year-old giant panda, Lang Yue, will be shipped back to China before she turns four, complying with an agreement with the China Wildlife Conservation Association that mandates the return of pandas born outside China. Born in 2024 at the Dutch park, Lang Yue is considered ready to live independently after more than two years without needing her mother. Her parents, the adult pandas Wu Wen and Xing Ya, will continue to reside at Ouwehands and could still have more cubs.
The park will hold a ceremonial send-off for Lang Yue at the end of the month. This move reflects the practice of “panda diplomacy,” where China loans pandas to strengthen international ties.
