Two young men detained after alleged coward punch at Adelaide Oval footbridge
Police arrested two 21-year-old suspects after a 38-year-old man was reportedly punched and knocked out on a footbridge near Adelaide Oval during a football match.
During the evening of a Crows-vs-GWS AFL game, police say two 21-year-old men approached a 38-year-old and a 37-year-old man on the footbridge beside Adelaide Oval at about 10:30 pm, leading to a verbal clash. The older man was allegedly coward-punched, his head hitting the ground and rendering him unconscious; he was later hospitalized with injuries described as non-life-threatening. The younger victim also suffered an assault.
Bystanders alerted officers, who pursued the suspects through the city and observed them entering a King William Street licensed venue, where they swapped clothing. The pair, both from Mount Barker, were arrested; one faces assault and assault causing harm charges, while the other is charged with assisting an offender. Police have appealed for additional witnesses to contact Crime Stoppers.
