Two Young Tourists Drown at Guardamar Beach Amid Strong Currents
A 25-year-old Ukrainian couple, both Polish residents, died after being caught in powerful currents at Els Vivers beach in Guardamar del Segura.
While staying with friends in Guardamar del Segura, a Ukrainian couple aged 25, both Polish residents, went swimming at Els Vivers beach despite a red flag indicating strong currents. Two women entered the water, prompting their partners to try to pull them out; one rescue succeeded, but the other rescuer also got into difficulty. Several beachgoers managed to bring the couple ashore after 2 p.m., but emergency crews were unable to save them.
The mayor, Jose Luis Saez, explained that lifeguard patrols continue on the central and Roqueta beaches until the end of the month, but not at Els Vivers, which is roughly two kilometres away. He warned that strong currents are common across local beaches and can quickly exhaust swimmers.
Why it matters
The deaths highlight safety gaps at lesser-patrolled beaches and the risks of swimming in strong currents.
