Tyler Perry Revives 'Why Did I Get Married' Franchise with New Netflix Drama

Tyler Perry has returned to his “Why Did I Get Married” series with the Netflix release “Why Did I Get Married Again?”, reuniting most of the original cast and adding Taraji P. Henson.

Tyler Perry revives his dormant “Why Did I Get Married” franchise with “Why Did I Get Married Again?”, now available on Netflix. The dramedy reunites the core ensemble—Jill Scott, Michael Jai White, Tasha Smith, Richard T. Jones—and introduces Taraji P. Henson as a new character linked to the wedding of daughter Jasmine. Perry again serves as writer, director, producer and actor, marking his third directorial effort of the year and the 13th since he shifted to streaming releases on Amazon Prime Video and Netflix in 2020.

The story centers on a sprawling cast of couples navigating infidelities, secret romances, and a destination wedding in Italy, with much of the humor derived from exaggerated situations such as a bad wig and over-the-top speeches. Reviewers describe the film as a familiar, over-baked mix of melodrama and tepid comedy, pointing to choppy editing, heavy exposition and a lack of subtlety, though they praise Henson’s performance. Overall, the movie is positioned as a predictable addition for Perry’s loyal fans, while others are advised to skip it.
