Typo to shut all UK stores and online site by early 2027

Australian retailer Typo announced it will close its remaining UK shops and cease online sales by early 2027, citing high rents and weak sales.

The Australian stationery chain Typo, part of the Cotton On Group, will withdraw completely from the United Kingdom, closing its remaining physical stores and shutting its online platform by early 2027. The retailer currently operates about 13 locations, and the first store to close was the Newcastle branch in Eldon Square on October 9. Remaining sites, such as the Metrocentre store in Gateshead, will follow in a phased schedule, though exact dates have not been disclosed.

Cotton On Group attributed the exit to escalating rent, high operating expenses and a decline in sales, stating there is no sustainable path forward. The group pledged to assist the UK workforce through the transition. While Typo exits, other Cotton On Group brands—including Cotton On, Cotton On Body and Cotton On Kids—will continue to serve the UK market via online and wholesale channels.

Why it matters

The closures remove a popular high-street retailer, highlighting the pressure on UK brick-and-mortar businesses.
