Tyron Peter Donald Grealy ordered to stand trial for infant's death in Queensland

On January 19, police were called to a residence in Gracemere, near Rockhampton, after reports that an infant was not breathing. The baby, Hazley Ellen Shanks, was transferred to Rockhampton Hospital and subsequently flown to Queensland Children’s Hospital in Brisbane, where she succumbed to her injuries three days after admission. Tyron Peter Donald Grealy, now 22, was charged with one count of murder and a domestic-violence offence and has been held in custody since.

A committal hearing in the Rockhampton Magistrates Court resulted in Magistrate Philippa Beckinsale ordering Grealy to stand trial in the Supreme Court at a later date. Defence counsel Laura Reece questioned medical experts about the timing of Hazley’s injuries, which forensic pathologist Dr Beng Beng Ong said likely occurred one to two weeks before the January incident, while paediatrician Dr Claire Gibbons agreed the injuries were not consistent with normal handling.
