U.S. Airstrike on Minab School Leaves Hundreds Dead, UN Calls It War Crime

A U.S. bombing of the Shajareh Tayyebeh children’s school in Minab killed at least 156 people, most of them children, and a UN fact-finding mission labeled the attack a war crime.

On February 28, a U.S. airstrike targeted the Shajareh Tayyebeh school in Minab, killing at least 156 individuals, including 120 children, 26 teachers and other civilians. Witnesses reported at least two direct hits on the building, with further strikes occurring hours later as parents and first responders arrived. The area had previously been a Revolutionary Guard Corps facility until 2013, and satellite images taken weeks before the attack showed the school’s murals, soccer field and children playing outside.

A United Nations fact-finding mission later determined the bombing constituted a war crime, yet the U.S. administration has not formally accepted blame. Jeremy Scahill, the investigation’s lead author, emphasized the pattern of repeated attacks on the school. The report incorporates testimonies from survivors, emergency workers and families of the victims.

Why it matters

The bombing shows the civilian toll of the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran and raises questions of accountability under international law.
