U.S. Ambassador Gillibrand Leaves Greece Without Traditional Farewell Meeting

U.S. Ambassador Kimberley Gillibrand is set to finish her term in Greece without the customary farewell audience with President Kosta Tasoulas after her abrupt removal.

Kimberley Gillibrand, the 57-year-old former one outlet presenter, resigned on Tuesday following a request from the White House. Greek presidential office confirmed that, because of the abrupt nature of her removal, the usual protocol-mandated farewell with President Kosta Tasoulas will not take place, though she may seek a private audience. Embassy insiders called the ouster a “violent decapitation” of the diplomatic mission, noting such dismissals are normally quiet.

Some staff said they felt a sense of relief, describing her as difficult and unresponsive to senior diplomats. Earlier reports linked her departure to allegations of questionable behavior and contacts, which she has denied, and a lawsuit has been filed by a supporter alleging defamation. Gillibrand thanked President Donald Trump for the opportunity to serve, calling the ambassadorship the greatest honor of her life.

Why it matters

The incident highlights tensions within U.S. diplomatic appointments and could affect U.S.-Greece relations.
