U.S. ambassador Tom Rose’s public feud with Polish speaker fails to derail parliamentary vote

After being credentialed in November, U.S. ambassador Tom Rose entered a public dispute with Sejm speaker Włodzimierz Czarzasty, denouncing the speaker’s comments about Donald Trump and announcing a temporary halt to embassy communications. Rose later labeled the speaker a “menace” on social media and, paradoxically, thanked him in a letter for the 428-3 vote honoring the 250th anniversary of American independence. His handling of Holocaust-related topics—dismiss­ing claims of Polish complicity as a “grotesque falsehood” and commenting on the Jedwabne massacre—has drawn rebuke from scholars and Polish officials.

Nevertheless, Poland’s defense spending and NATO arms imports continued unchanged, and recent diplomatic achievements, such as the release of journalist Andrzej Poczobut, occurred without Rose’s involvement. The episode highlights a divergent diplomatic approach where the ambassador defends both his president and host nation while eschewing traditional diplomatic restraint.
