U.S. and allies pull out of Erbil, ending Operation Inherent Resolve in Iraq
The United States and its coalition partners have withdrawn all forces and equipment from Erbil’s airbase, officially concluding Operation Inherent Resolve in Iraq.
U.S. officials announced that the last remaining troops and hardware have left the Erbil airfield, marking the closure of the 12-year anti-ISIL campaign. Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell described the exit as a successful culmination of the mission. Responsibility for security will now shift to Iraqi forces and Kurdish Peshmerga fighters, who will keep the extremist group suppressed. The move signals a transition from a multinational wartime effort to an Iraqi-led security framework.
Why it matters
It marks the end of a major multinational anti-ISIL operation and shifts security duties to Iraqi and Kurdish forces.
