U.S. Announces Additional $267 Million to Combat Central African Ebola Outbreak
The United States will provide an extra $267 million to help curb the Ebola epidemic spreading in central Africa, chiefly the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
At a side event of the UN General Assembly, senior U.S. State Department representatives announced a fresh $267 million commitment to fight the Ebola outbreak in central Africa. This addition raises the overall U.S. contribution to $886 million, with $107 million already allocated by the Department of Health and Human Services. The funding is intended to support the construction of treatment facilities, supply diagnostic equipment and provide medical countermeasures for health workers operating in the field.
The outbreak, first detected in May, is the second deadliest on record after the West African epidemic of 2014-2016. Officials urged other nations to join the effort to reach a $2 billion target needed to control the disease, especially in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
