U.S. Army Apache Helicopter Crashes Surge Amid Transmission Faults and Human Error
Apache helicopters are experiencing a spike in accidents this fiscal year, with investigations pointing to transmission problems and operator mistakes.
A review of military accident records indicates that Apache helicopters are crashing at rates not seen since 2011, with the current fiscal year on track for the second-highest tally. An Army flight safety bulletin attributes more than fifty percent of the accidents to human error, though the share of crashes caused by equipment failures remains unclear. One Class A mishap was traced to a major transmission breakdown, a defect that can impair tail rotor, power and hydraulic systems.
The overall major-crash rate so far this year is about 6.24 per 100,000 flying hours, down from roughly 7.02 in 2024. After a deadly collision in Texas that claimed Chief Warrant Officer 2 Deontre T. Huey and Warrant Officer Seth L. Olmstead, the Army lifted a pause on training flights. An Army spokesperson expressed sorrow for the fallen servicemen but declined to release detailed technical data.
