U.S. envoy aims to free up to a thousand Belarusian political detainees by September
Special envoy John Coale said he will travel to Belarus in a few weeks, hoping to negotiate the release of additional political prisoners by mid-September.
U.S. special envoy John Coale announced plans to return to Belarus within the next few weeks, aiming to broker the freedom of additional political prisoners by mid-September. He highlighted that prior negotiations resulted in the release of approximately 700 to 800 individuals after Washington relaxed certain sanctions on Minsk. Coale believes the upcoming talks could push the total number of freed detainees toward a thousand.
The envoy was appointed by President Trump last year and has built a relationship with President Alexander Lukashenko through extensive discussions. Belarusian opposition figure Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya reported a recent slowdown in U.S. diplomatic pressure but did not explain the cause. Coale’s comments were delivered to Voice of America’s Russian language service and later posted on its website.
Why it matters
The effort could significantly improve human-rights conditions in Belarus and affect U.S.-Belarus relations.
