U.S. Gas Prices Top $4 a Gallon as Middle East Conflict Tightens Oil Supply

The national average for regular gasoline rose to $4.28 per gallon, driven by escalating US-Iran tensions that have disrupted global oil flows.

According to AAA, the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in the United States climbed to $4.28, marking a $1.08 rise compared with the same period last year. The jump coincides with a new phase of the six-month US-Iran conflict, during which US forces have hit several Iranian oil tankers and Iran has struck vessels and a U.S. base in Jordan. Iran-backed Houthi rebels have also attacked Saudi oil sites and threatened Red Sea shipping, further tightening supply.

Brent crude breached the $100-a-barrel level, while diesel set a national record of $5.94 per gallon. Prices vary widely across states, with California averaging $5.89 and Indiana $3.56. Retail analyst Carol Spieckerman said higher fuel costs are likely to lift prices for airline tickets, groceries and other petroleum-based goods, squeezing small businesses and altering consumer spending patterns.

Why it matters

Rising fuel costs raise everyday expenses and fuel broader inflation across the U.S. economy.
